Note to Music for 'The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily', a Fairy Tale by Goethe
Goethe's fairy tale appeared to me in a new light when I read Karl Koenig's Michaelmas Address of 1962, where he related the 12 characters of the fairy tale to the signs of the Zodiac. I was already acquainted with the signs of the Zodiac and their specific tones as elaborated by Rudolf Steiner. This spurred me on to write some music with the intention to find the melody out of the single tone relating to each character of the fairy tale and its Zodiac sign. The music was written to be interspersed in the reading of the evolving story, to emphasise different characters. However, it could also be used as part of a dramatic production. Susanne Steffen |
