I was born 1958 in a small industrial village in Derbyshire. I left Secondary School in 1974 where I achieved my GCE music. After leaving school my musical knowledge has been mostly self-taught – mainly studying theory and composition, passing ABRSM 1-7 theory.
I've been a member of the Norfolk Composers Group for about a year. As I say, I am mostly self-taught. But since joining the group I have learnt quite a bit, mainly improving score presentation.
The group is always looking for new members, and we are all in a similar situation, with the objective of trying to get our music performed and published. We hold several salons in the year where we all produce compositions and are then open to criticism. We are holding a concert in March of mostly our own compositions and filling in with established Composers in aid of Parkinson's. Our compositions consist of choral music, tonal and atonal – a real mixed bag.
My genres are mostly instrumental. I have composed music for solo instruments through to full orchestra. At the time of writing I am composing a piece for piano, violin and cello for a member of our group, for his daughter and granddaughters to perform. I am also working on a composition for flute and piano in four movements called East County Sketches.
In addition, there is a playwright and poet in America who has sent me several poems which she would like me to set to music. I have started on these, but with the poems being very contemporary it's quite difficult for timing. Quite a challenge, but I'm enjoying it.
