Anna Prokhovnik Cooper
Anna Prokhovnik Cooper was born in Australia, and grew up there, completing her education with a Music/Psychology degree and Teacher Training at Sydney University. She worked in Sydney high schools as a Music specialist for a couple of years, before moving to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Here she continued teaching music in high schools, but became disillusioned with the curriculum she was forced to teach.
It wasn't until she experienced a Steiner/Waldorf school curriculum that she became inspired again to resume her career as a Music specialist teacher. In this system, the child is taught according to its physical and mental development, and Anna experienced here a vastly improved satisfaction, and achievement for both the children and the teacher.
It was during this time that she was introduced to the lyre, and it quickly became the most important instrument in her life. When she finally left the Steiner/Waldorf school, she established a career with the lyre, playing for old people, in hospitals, for special needs children and adults (in Camphill and state institutions), teaching in two schools, giving individual lessons, and leading a thriving group of up to 10 lyre players in the area. She arranged music of all kinds for the schools and the group to play.
Anna also led several workshops for the Arion Association of the U.K. and Ireland, and has travelled to the U.S., South Africa, Germany, Sweden, Australia, and China, teaching the lyre. All this work was extremely rewarding, but finally it slowed down when she moved from N. Ireland to Brittany, France. Here, she continues with some lyre lessons (and also a group in London), individual playing, and playing socially. She is still very enthusiastic about teaching and workshops for all ages on the lyre, or music in the Waldorf curriculum, anywhere in the world.
