Songs of the Seven Planets – Foreword
When you begin to use words to describe the quality of the lyre, there comes a feeling of 'confining' rather than defining the sound. Nevertheless, if you take as one aspect its extreme purity of tone, this experience can lead to a sense of a child-like quality of innocence – which in turn moves between a feeling of nobility and seriousness – and a light-filled playfulness.
The beautiful pictures contained in Hilary Kidman's poems visit the essence of each planetary sphere. They were originally designed for use with eurythmy, speaker and children's chorus. As soon as you hear the words, they begin to dance and sing – and it is this imaginative quality that can find its echo in the use of lyre and voice – magic link between worlds.
All the songs are based on the various tones of the day and the arising planetary scales. They may be performed in sequence or individually. Please feel free to re-arrange the lyre part into different lyre voices – but do not double the lyre with the singing part.
