Fragility of Peace
This is in two parts, containing musical material which is also employed in the lyre parts for the first and third sections of 'Everyman' – a longer piece which includes children's voices and is also published by Upper Esk Music. 'Fragility of Peace' therefore gives the opportunity for some of the material of two sections of 'Everyman' to be played purely instrumentally.
This edition follows the manuscript version. Where this contained simple references to playing previous sections, these have been fully notated in sequence.
Colin was a masterful lyre player, including performing on the 'solo lyre' – an instrument with a large range. The original scoring would have required two solo lyres and an alto lyre. However, there are often no solo lyres available in a group, or only one at the most. The music has therefore been adjusted in one or two places with the aim of making it possible for a more usual combination of lyres.
The second stave ('Lyre 2') would most likely be played by alto lyre(s). In the manuscript the sections from letter F to letter G (then again letter N to letter O) were duplicating the notes of the upper stave. These are printed with small noteheads in the full score and Lyre 2 part, as these sections would not be playable on an alto lyre without being transposed down an octave, which would alter the character of the music at these points.
